10 Things you must know about Apple iPhone 3GS
After rumors about specs and screenshots, the long awaited next gen iphone has finally been revealed at Apple’s WWDC conference by Phil Schiller. Let’s make a thorough analysis about what we expected and what we got at last. The comprehensive analysis will cover :
- Design
- Camera
- Storage
- Display and Graphics
- Processing Power
- Connectivity
- Battery Life
- Digital Compass
- Other Special Features
- Price & Availability
- Conclusion
Design
The design remains unchanged. The new phone looks absolutely identical with the old phone from outside including the same glossy finish of the back and the same form factor of 4.5X2.4X0.48 inches. The weight increases only a bit from previous 133 grams to 135 grams, I wonder if that can be called a weight gain at all!
Anyway, the same form factor is a bless for the iPhone accessories makers at least. And oh! Apple goes green. They are using Aresenic free glass and BDF-Free, Mercury-Free LCD for the screen.
Camera
As expected, the camera resolution is increased to 3 MP though we speculated it to be of 3.2 MP resolution. Anyway Apple may be rounding off that figure to 3MP. We will get to know the exact resolution when we get hands on the device. The camera is equipped with auto focus, which means the leaked screenshot with blue rectangle for focusing any object was real. It also features auto exposure and auto white balance in addition to the tap to focus facilities. Special Macro and low light modes are indication that the camera would be really a good and neat snapper. Geotagging of both photos and video is supported which means that you don’t need to remember where you took the photo.
The camera supports video which was a long expected feature. The video is of VGA resolution at 30 fps with auto focus, auto white balance and auto exposure. The video can be edited using finger and you can share it via MMS, E-Mail, Mobile Me and YouTube.

The interesting part regarding the camera is that any applications can now access all the camera functions now. We can expect some games which will track some objects on the camera screen or so.
Storage
The leaks revealed that the capacity would be 16GB and 32GB and it came to be exactly matching the truth.
Display and Graphics
The display seems to be identical to the original 3.5 inch widescreen multitouch display of iPhone 3G though there were rumours about OLED screens. But those screens come pretty expensive and it is almost impossible to deliver OLED screen maintaining the same price point. Any way the display comes with a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating which may help you soothe the pain of not getting the OLED screen.
The iPhone 3GS includes new 3D graphics support which will be able to run faster and more complicated 3D games.

Processing Power
The ‘S’ in iPhone 3G S stands for SPEED! With the help of new built-in processor, launching applications and rendering webpages are much faster that before as we speculated. Apple claims that launching messages is 2.1 times faster, loading New York Times is 2.9 times faster in Safari. The processor also consumes less energy which is reflected in increased battery life.
Connectivity
The ‘S’ also stands for faster 7.2 Mbps 3G connectivity. This option will stream in data faster if the service provider supports for that. The other connectivity options include Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/EDGE, WiFi 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.
Battery Life
As speculated, the battery life has increased upto 50% from the previous one. According to Apple, the battery is capable of providing 12 hours of talktime on 2G, 5 hours on 3G, 300 hours standby time, 5 hours of internet use on 3G, 9 hours of WiFi use, 10 hours of video and 30 hours of audio. I must say that it’s a pretty good standard battery if it goes as claimed.

Digital Compass
Rumors said a 3-axis digital compass, and showed it in action in a leaked photo of the compass app. And it turned up, exactly as expected. They call it a magnetometer that works with a compass application. It is also integrated with the Google maps app which shows the orientation of the phone (which means your orientation with a semitransparent cone.

Other Special Features
Among other features, the most interesting is the Voice Control Feature which lets you talk with your iPhone. You can verbally instruct the phone to play similar songs or just use it to call people. It also has the speculated Nike+ Feature.

Price & Availability
As expected, the price points remain the same despite a good improvement in the hardware. The 16GB version is available for $199 and 32GB model is available for $299. Anyway, AT&T is charging more for the phone and you have to spend $599 for the 16GB and $699 for the 32GB model. What the hell! AT&T is really crazy!
Conclusion
At the end of the day, we can only say that the new iPhone 3G S is just an expected evolution on the original iPhone 3G. There is nothing revolutionary that that can drive another craze for the latest iPhone. But the changes have erased its flaws and made it an irresistible champion. Can iPhone 3GS beat Palm Pre? What do you think?

I just bought the iPhone 3G S 16GB…my battery dies by 2pm!! I’ve almost been stranded 2 times because my phone died. I’ve followed all the ways to save the battery and it’s still dying. I feel like I got ripped off…I either have to travel with my charger and hope I have a place to plug it in or I have to use the phone only and not use the internet or other apps on my phone. What’s the point of having all these capabilities if you can’t even use them…
