13 Reasons Why iPhone will Bite the Dust Before Nokia N97
December 2nd, 2008From the desktop to the laptop and now to your pocket, the Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence
Jonas Geust, Vice President, heading Nokia Nseries.
True. You can only say whoa! and you can only feel out of place after knowing about Nokia N97, the latest touchscreen mobile phone from Nokia. My first reaction after seeing the mobile phone was, what will the self proclaimed, unnecessarily sophisticated, limited featured Apple iPhone will do? I wonder if iPhone users are thinking of dumping iPhone in the garbage box and opt for Nokia N97 nextyear. If not, lemme tell you why you should.

Conversation between iPhone and Nokia N97
1. Voice Dialing
iPhone: Bluetooth headset, Bluetooth $600 phone and there is no voice dialing in me. Yes you heard me right.
Nokia N97: Huh. I don’t care about such silly things. It is there in me as if I I never lost it.
2. One-push speed dialing
iPhone: There is no equivalent of the push-and-hold speed dialing in me that exist on most other phones. Instead, I have a Favorites list gives you a quick(ish) access to the most frequently dialed numbers.
Nokia N97: What were you doing while getting manufactured? Couldn’t you scream louder? I have that facility.
3. Bluetooth DUN Profile
iPhone: Unlike nearly every other Bluetooth enabled cell phone, I will not share internet connection with other devices (e.g. a laptop). In fact, out of roughly 25 common Bluetooth profiles for cell phones, I only support two. And believe me its not a hardware fault.
Nokia N97: Are you serious! Are you really serious! Lol. This is 21st century. Please wake up.
4. Saving Images/Files
iPhone: We have a gallery here of iPhone wallpapers. I browse to it on the iPhone. I find my image I want. And then I wait, I can’t download it? I can’t choose to set it as wallpaper? I have to go to my Mac, browse to the URL again, download the photo, purchase and install iLife, import the photo into iPhoto, set it to sync with the iPhone, open up iTunes, hit sync, then browse to it on my iPhone and set as wallpaper. Its not that tough you know.
Nokia N97: Haha. True. You can do it normally from my phone. Get a life you iPhone. I mean these things are so common that I don’t even care to look for it. It is there.
5. Flash
iPhone: Seriously. There was no flash support in me until recently. But anyway, even when using YouTube, I cant save the clip on the phone. Not much of a trouble no?
Nokia N97: I had flash support right from the time when N was spelt. I have it now too.
6. Camera Options
iPhone: I had asked them, where is my zoom. I have a 2MP camera. But that is not sufficient my users say. But no zoom, even I protest.
Nokia N97: Lol. I don’t complain. I have a 5MP camera with Zeiss lens and LED flash and zoom. Anyway, what about your Video support (winks)
7. Video Options
iPhone: I can not shoot a video.
But I can play a video.
Nokia N97: Lol. I can shoot at a DVD quality movie recording. And 16:9 ratio. Okay. I will not bug you any more. I know you are way behind.
8. Copy/Paste Option
iPhone: I can’t give the copy paste facility to people. I would have loved so many things to be included, Alas.
Nokia N97: Don’t talk to me about such petty issues. You don’t even have message forwarding options. I wonder what actually do you have!
9. Touchscreen and Keypad
iPhone: I have a touch screen that is superior to you in every respect.
Nokia N97: That is because people haven’t used me yet. The most physically immediate stand-out feature of me is the kick-out full QWERTY keyboard, hidden behind a 3.5-inch widescreen 16:9 touch display that tilts smartly above the keys. Both control methods neatly coexist and are tailored to ensure every experience. And don’t tell me now that I am bragging.
10. SMS
iPhone: I accept defeat here. I can’t forward the SMS. I can’t send phone numbers via SMS text message. I can not save VCard and contacts to my phone contacts. I can’t click on MMS notification to go to Safari to view.
Nokia N97: I always knew I am intimidating. But I pity your inabilities now. These are basic features. You can get them even in my mediocre brothers.
11. Bluetooth Stereo Headsets
iPhone: I am more of an essential kind. Bluetooth stereo headsets work perfectly well when you are on a call. But due to a redundant bluetooth stack, you can not stream your music. I suppose you are not a music lover *smug look*.
Nokia N97: I know I know. When you have nothing to gain from, you pretend as if there is nothing to lose. Hah!
12. Capacity
iPhone: Hey I have a 8 GB/ 16 GB capacity. Do you know that? Can you beat me on that?
Nokia N97: No I can not. Because you win here with your ignorance. I have a built-in 32GB memory and so effectively you can plug in another 32 GB of MicroSDHC and make it 64 GB. More than what a laptop can hold you know. Still in a mood to fight?
13. Geo Location
iPhone: I have maps with GPS and I have plenty of other apps that can help anyone to find anything. Can you compete?
Nokia N97: Nopes. I don’t like intruders. I am location-savvy, automatically sensing where it is at any given time via A-GPS. The benefit being that you’ll be able to tap into local services with ease and share your social location with friends minus any extra fiddling or fuss.
In Conclusion
Despite all the fun and drama, I am really mesmerized by the features that Nokia N97 offers. It is the first and true next gen multimedia computers inside mobile phone. I have concerns for N-Gage games though. When I was handed over a Nokia N81 phone to play N-gage games, my reviews were on a brighter side and deservingly for N-Gage. Unless the game is touch screen enabled, I doubt if the new keyboard style will hamper a bit of a gaming experience. On a closing note I feel, only two people will not go for Nokia N97 leaving iPhone. One who considers only the look of things (then iphone is still a better option than Nokia N97, cause the latter looks still Nokia-ish) and Steve Jobs. Period.

Most interesting indeed! Having a N95 and knowing it well, i will undoubtedly upgrade. Hopefully some of your comments will tickle the programmers into a few missing tweaks for us to play with. Cost in the US will certainly give us a proper out-the-door attitude of glee!

No apps = Fail. Even the crack berry is open to developers.

Apple sets the standards, the rest do follow. Even my Mother had understand the iPhone within minutes, and thats the killer application thats count most, rest are gadgets for some nerds.

iPhone (firmware 2.2) can save images to gallery so you can use them as Wallpapers.
Flash on Nokia isn’t like Flash in browser - it’s just “Flash Lite”.
BTW is there any Nokia Store with 10000 apps? Or iTunes-like application for synchronizing?
December 3rd, 2008 at 3:35 pm
LOL, you’re pathetic
Half of those things you mentioned are not true..at least when it comes to iPhone. Don’t get me wrong, these days I plan to buy N95 cheaply because there ARE things that iPhone cannot do, but what you mentioned above deserves a good laugh.
Whoever wrote the above article should know that iPhone:
1. can have a speeddial..presented with a photo of that person (via 3rd party app)
2. can share the internet with laptops (via free 3rd party apps)
3. can record video (via free 3rd party app)
4. can save images you come across on the internet
Then, braging about 32GB of built-in memory and compare it to, at the time N97 hits the street, to a year old iPhone is completely ignorant.
Rubish, rubish, rubish, I tell ya

I can not but agree.

True. That is a really valid point. But since its about gadgets and who are obsessed with them, I feel, a bit of technicalities are allowed.

@ Cpt Obvious
My point is not that Apple isn’t well equipped but, why iPhone is not that? Why do I need to go to different apps and third party applications to juice my phone (which was bought from Apple only) with ‘basic’ features?
For the time being, Nokia has a better and perhaps the most feature- rich mobile phone with the introduction of Nokia N97. I will credit it to Apple with as much glory when they come out with an iPhone that needs not to come up with apps every three months to give their users some basic features.
Thanks for your time and comment.
Regards.

@ Mario
First of all, I will like to quote the exact point I said to Cpt Obvious, that
My point is not that Apple isn’t well equipped but, why iPhone is not that? Why do I need to go to different apps and third party applications to juice my phone (which was bought from Apple only) with ‘basic’ features?

Now, I fully agree with the points you have made and that the features exist but its only NOW. Apple didn’t equip you with all these features but you got them over the course of time. I have strong objections against iPhone’s first hand experience to be a phone that lacks key and basic features.
and thanks for having a good laugh and finding it pathetic. That was exactly what I intended to be.
I appreciate your generous corrections.

> Even my Mother had understand the iPhone within minutes,
That is the single biggest point in favor of iPhone I am hearing everywhere. It is easy to use. Nokia N series has traditionally been hard to fully use to its maximum and I speak from personal experience (and I am a hardcore techie). I think N97 may break that mould.

This article was FAIL. Definitely written by an iPhone or Apple hater. I own a Nokia, but what the hell. A Nokia is going to outlive an iPhone because it has a flash and zoom. Wow — two really lame reasons dude.

Who says that the iphone 3G is the end of Apples mobile phone portfolio.. There is more to come in coming months.. Just imagine, with such a feature lacking phone, if apple can command a 17% smartphone market share, it can easily come up with a new qwerty iphone with some extra features that will make n97 run for its life. 6 months time isenough for apple to steal nokia’s sleep. No one can beat apples patented multitouch and ease of OS. My 6yrs old nephew uses my iphone better than me. Its truly an innovation. I remember nokia criticising touch screen phones quoting the market is not ready for it. Actually nokia wasn’t ready for it.. Nokia wanted to continue with its practice of launching 5 lookalike phone with a little tweaks and changes. Apple has thought them a lesson and made them realize world is running really fast. I am waiting for apple to come up with a communicator (e90) like phone and i am sure that will be the end of nokia as apple will not compromise in the looks of the phone while loading it up with the best of the specifications.
