AP Source: GM to open battery plant near Detroit

DETROIT — A person briefed on the decision says General Motors Corp. will build battery packs for the Chevrolet Volt electric car at a facility south of Detroit.

The person says the plant in Brownstown Township about 15 miles from the city initially will employ about 100 people to assemble the packs from Korean-made batteries by a subsidiary of LG Chem of South Korea.

The person did not want to be identified because GM has not publicly announced the location.

The Volt will be built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck factory. It will travel 40 miles on a charge from a home electrical outlet, with a small gasoline engine to generate power after that.

The person said GM will invest $43 million in an existing building.

The Volt is targeted to come out in November 2010.
