On the Call: Apple COO Tim Cook

Apple Inc. sold 5.2 million iPhones in 80 countries in the most recent quarter, but the must-have gadget still isn’t available in China — at least not officially.

Analysts who cover Apple are keeping an eye on the company’s progress toward China’s massive wireless market. Shaw Wu, a Kaufman Bros. analyst, wrote in a recent research note that China Unicom and China Mobile are battling for status as Apple’s sole iPhone partner in the country. China Unicom, he wrote, has 133 million mobile customers, while China Mobile has 488 million.

By comparison, Verizon Wireless, the biggest mobile carrier in the U.S., claims more than 86 million customers.

China is clearly a big opportunity for Apple, and Wu said in an interview that he was under the impression Apple was on track for a China deal by the end of the year. In a conference call with analysts Tuesday afternoon, though, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook had a slightly different answer.

QUESTION: Tim, any update on the iPhone in China?

RESPONSE: Nothing to add to date specifically, other than it continues to be a priority project and we hope to be there within a year.
