China Becomes the Proud Owner of World’s Fastest Super Computer

BEIJING, CHINA (GaeaTimes.com) — The World’s fastest super computer now belongs to China. The computer in Beijing, Tianhe-1A has a performance track record of 2.507 petaflops. It has been measured by LINPACK Benchmark. The computer is located at Beijing and is designed by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) of China.

It is fully operational now. The Supercomputer uses 7,168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 GPUs and 14,336 Intel Xeon CPUs. The total cost of the computer is $88 million. It consists of 103 cabinets with a total weight of 155 tons. The entire system is powered by 4.04 Megawatts of electricity.

The second position of the world’s fastest computer belongs to Cray XT5 Jaguar which is based in U.S. National Center for Computational Sciences at OAK Ridge National Laboratories. Powered by 224,162 Opetron CPUs the Supercomputer belonging to the US Government has acheived a performance record of 1.75 Petaflops. As per Nvidia, the Tianhe-1A will be used as an open access system for large scientific computations.
