Cool-er e-book Reader Looks Cool, Light on Pocket but not upto Kindle
E-book readers are generally good enough but Interead’s Cool-er ebook reader is ultra cool with its iPodish look and eight color shades like hot pink, racing green etc. The lightweight e-book reader has 1GB internal memory and also has an SD Card Slot which you can use to read loads of books. Can it be a real competitor to the Amazon Kindle?
Storage : The device has internal storage of 1GB half of that of Kindle but the memory can be expanded as it has an SD Card Slot.
Wireless Connectivity : The main feature that we miss in this device is the wireless capability as found in the Kindle from Amazon.com. You have to search, sample and buy to download a book from its online store called Coolerbooks.com. Then you can transfer them to this reader via USB cable from your PC or Mac. Unfortunately the books on the site seems to be more expensive than those on Amazon online store. Elmore Leonard’s Road Dogs costs $21.59 at Coolerbooks, John Sandford’s Wicked Prey $22.36. Both cost $9.99 in the Kindle Store.
Navigation : The buttons and controls are minimal. Pages can be turned by clicking a clicking a click wheel on the right corner of the device. The screen orientations can be changed from portrait to landscape mode by pressing one of the four buttons.
Weight : The reader weighs only 6 ounces which is about 40% lighter than Kindle 2.
Supported File Format : Cool-er supports ePub e-book standard (which Amazon doesn’t) along with the TXT, JPEG and PDF formats. You can read your own documents on the device. Eight languages are supported : French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, traditional and simple chinese and English of course.
Battery : The battery is claimed to last about 8,000 page turns which is enough but the battery level indicator fluctuates up and down as per its mood.
Price
$249 for an ebook reader is affordable if you consider the price of Sony Reader at $299 and $359 for first Kindle and its successor and $489 for for large screen Kindle DX.
