Today we are operating what we believe to be the world’s most efficient data centers

This was said by none other than Google, the most used Internet search engine, the largest seller of online advertising, the busiest online video site (YouTube) worldwide. So one can very well imagine what a mammoth task it is to keep all these data updated in such innumerable servers of Google, that too 24*7. So when they came out with such frank and impressive statement it was obvious that it will be a head turner.

Data centers accounted for about 1.5 percent of all electricity consumed in the United States in 2006. Just three years from now, the figure is expected to rise to 2.5 percent. As a result, Google’s main rival Microsoft also decided to take up a healthier approach in collaborative information sharing in energy efficiency.

Rich Miller, editor of DataCenterKnowledge.com said,

They are being selective about what they are disclosing as most people have.I think it is a good start. Philosophically, it is important to get more of this info out there.

Though he also pointed out that,

Any company publicly touting [the energy efficiency of their data centers] is always going to have a certain ‘trust me’ component to it. Right now there isn’t a third party verification for this.

When Rich Miller’s words make perfect sense, we hope that Google’s claim is right and they along with all the bigger energy consumers in the world approach towards better energy efficiency techniques, if needed collaboratively.

Next time, hibernate your machine than leaving it idly logged on for hours. Lol.

Ciao!
