Samsung India bets big on touch screen mobiles

April 1st, 2009 NEW DELHI - Samsung India Wednesday launched its full-touch slider phone, Samsung Ultra, and said it has partnered with the state-run telecom operators BSNL and MTNL to bundle phones for the third generation (3G) mobile services. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) rolled out 3G services and are bundling handsets with their services for which they have tied up with Samsung.

September 23rd, 2009 NEW DELHI - Tata Docomo, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices, in association with Korean handset maker Samsung Mobile, Wednesday launched India's first Android-powered mobile phone. Priced at Rs.28,990, Samsung Galaxy (I7500) has a 3.2-inch full touch-screen and WiFi connectivity, and will provide users access to Google mobile services and full web browsing at high speed.

June 4th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Nokia's flagship touch-screen handset N-97 will be launched nationwide within two weeks at a likely price of around Rs.35,000, the company announced Thursday. "The handset is expected to begin shipping in India in the next two weeks," Vineet Taneja, director-marketing of Nokia India, told reporters here.

April 9th, 2009 SAN FRANCISCO - Taipei-based company Elan Microelectronics has sued Apple for the alleged infringement of two of its touch screen patents in the iconic US technology company's iPhone and other devices. The suit was filed Tuesday in the US District Court in San Francisco, close to Apple's Silicon Valley headquarters, court papers posted Wednesday showed.

July 10th, 2009 CHENNAI - Tamil Nadu will soon get its first battery-powered car plant, and India its second, to be set up by electric vehicle manufacturer Bavina. According to a government statement Friday, Bavina Cars India has been allotted 100 acres in the special economic zone (SEZ) in Ranipet near here, promoted by the State Industries Promotion Corp of Tamil Nadu.

March 19th, 2009 KOLKATA - Consumer electronics company Sony India Pvt Ltd is expecting a lower sales growth in 2009-10 due to the global meltdown, a top official said here Thursday. 'We expect a sales growth in the range of 15-20 percent, lower from the current fiscal,' Sony India head (sales) Sunil Nayyar told reporters.

June 11th, 2009 NOIDA - Leading white goods and mobile handset manufacturer Samsung Wednesday launched a low-cost solar-powered mobile phone, and said it was planning to introduce about 20 more models by year-end. The new handset, launched under its low-cost line of products - "Guru" - at a price of Rs.2,799, has a solar panel on the back, which can be used to charge the battery anywhere the sun is shining.

In Braille, letters are encoded using a two-by-three matrix in which each character is represented by a different configuration of raised and absent dots at the six locations.

February 24th, 2009 HYDERABAD - Motorola India and the city-based digital publisher Pressmart Media Ltd Tuesday announced that the live news-on-the-mobile service would now be available on Motorola phones in the country. The service would be available on MOTO VE66, MOTOSURF A3000 and MOTOROKR EM35 phones, slated for distribution in India.

April 8th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Unperturbed by the financial crisis and a slump in sales, Japanese auto major Toyota Motor Wednesday announced that it will launch its high end sport utility vehicle (SUV) Fortuner in India by September this year. Fortuner, which is currently available in Philippines and Malaysia, will be imported to India in completely knocked down (fully disassembled) condition and is expected to be sold at around Rs.20 lakh.

June 10th, 2009 MUMBAI - General Motors India launched the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) version of its popular small car Chevrolet Spark here on Tuesday. The LPG version is GM India's first clean-burning liquefied natural gas car in India, built at company's plant at Talegaon in Maharashtra.
