While the entire technology world was concentrating on the pre-launch of Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 7 (due in a short while), Microsoft came out with another surprise for developers. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the company will unveil a new operating system called Windows Cloud (tentatively titled) within a month.
What is Windows Cloud?ARTICLE CONTINUED BELOW
Apparently, we will acquire more information in this matter from Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in LA, which takes place at the end of October. Ballmer, not disclosing anything concrete yet, hinted towards including geo replication, management modelling and an SOA model, effectively to create a new platform. So basically it’s an operating system designed for developers who want to write applications for cloud-computing. But without knowing precise details, let’s not get into that yet.
Ballmer with his characteristic and not-so-charming gift of the gab attacked their professional rival Google by saying,
If you talk to Google they’ll say it’s thin client computing but then they’ll issue a new browser that’s basically a big fat operating system designed to compete with Windows but running on top of it.
But if that wasn’t enough, with his parting words,
…The last thing we want is for somebody else to obsolete us, if we’re gonna get obseleted [sic] we better do it to ourselves
We will wrap this one up and hope Ballmer has as much invincibility in his coming projects as his words.
