Power and ability of these devices are changing dramatically with time. Now, what can we expect from a netbook of 2009? Lets make a note.

1. Processor : Dual Core Intel Atom processors Or AMD, Via, or someone else which does not eat up too much power.

2. Batteries : Standard 6 or 9 cell batteries like the mainstream laptops which will provide 6-8 hour computing time.

3. Display : 10 inch screens seems to be most suited for netbooks. The screen resolution should be standard 1080p. Less sized netbooks does not provide good readability.

4. SSD : 64+ GB solid state drives are expected in a netbook. We don’t want to see traditional hard disks in netbooks.

5. Multi-touch screens : Something like a 10 inch iPhone Screen. I hope they will be available in 2009.

6. External Monitor support : All netbooks should support DVI and VGA out - at least one, but preferably two (one of each is sufficient). There are must to do the presentation on the go.

7. Smaller and lighter : Ideal weight of a netbook should be 1kg. I do not expect a lesser weight in a full featured netbook.

8. Instant-On OS for quick startup : Some bigger manufacturers are already doing this. This will ensure more productivity of your netbook. Also there will be a standard OS installed on the computer for full functional use of its capabilities.

9. Lower prices : A full features netbook should be available around $350.

10. Windows 7 : A lot of people are already running the Windows 7 beta on various netbook and are reporting good results. Expect to see it loaded in your netbook of 2009.

I just got a Dell NetBook - Mini 10 that I really love. It doesn’t have a touch screen but runs fast and smoothly. The only thing that ever bothers me is the lack of a CD Rom but I plan on getting an add on. I love the portability. I can throw it in my oversized purse and jet. It’s great! (I got it for free too, with 7 referrals….how awesome is that!)
