In my experience as a tech journalist Linux and gaming has rarely been used in the same sentence. The reason for this perception
is because the big game developers like EA, Activision have ignored the platform in general. They can not be blamed for the simple reason that Linux as an OS is used by roughly 5% of total people using computers. use it as an OS. Add to that the gaming culture in general is shifting towards a console based platform, be it the PS3, the Xbox 360 or the Wii. If you visit the site of wine, you will be amazed to know know that a majority of users still prefer timeless classics like Starcraft, The Sims 2 etc. But the majority of users prefer MMORPG games like the global behemoth World of Warcraft, Magic the gathering online.,
Eve online etc. Games like Fallout 3, Bioshock feature later in the list.
From this data in our hand it may be inferred that a majority of users uses hardware from the older generation. Moreover Linux users love MMORPG s. Some one told me the other day that Linux will be a major gaming platform the day people will be able to put the game DVD into their drives, install the game and play it. Well though that may not be an unfounded allegation, linux based games as such is not a rarity. Look hard and you may find uncut gems.
Linux as an os has one chief advantage over Windows or Mac, you guessed it linux is ‘free’. Check out the list of free games i have prepared to get you started with gaming on Linux. I would suggest that you update your graphics driver as well, as you
may resolve quite a few issues. To download you graphics driver for Nvdia based card go here or if you are an ATI user go here.
Nvdia also released the 3d drivers for linux some time ago so we may expect more games to support linux in the near future.
